This old booklet remained hidden in my library for years and I cannot remember what ever triggered me to buy it in any case not the ugly cover which in my opinion does not tell anything about the contents at allMy expectations were low when I started reading Despite Galbraith being a terrific economist after all these are viewpoints expressed almost fifty years ago and the world did change and became much better as Hans Rosling wonderfully demonstrates in Factfulness Ten Reasons We re Wrong About the World and Why Things Are Better Than You ThinkThe first chapters are slow and it is unclear where the author is heading for Once his point is clear the message gets very strong Galbraith s analysis on mass poverty is controversial simple and in my opinion got confirmed by how the world evolved during the recent decades The world got better people moved massively to cities reading that the mass urban poverty of favellas is already a step forward compared to mass rural poverty raised my eyebrows and there has been a lot of migration which the author sees as very beneficial for all parties and that s a refreshing thought in these times of pointless walls and xenophobe fearmongeringI only give it three stars because of a reason for which the author himself apologizes in the introduction these are transcriptions of lectures and while the lectures themselves must have been very interesting it cripples the written text Also some supporting statistics and graphs might have added value instead of the lengthy footnotesI think I will soon pick up The Bottom Billion Why the Poorest Countries are Failing and What Can Be Done About It leaf once again through it for a review promised
